Beauty products, such as skin serums, hair masks, and cuticle oils, are all great for maintaining glowing skin, lustrous hair, and strong nails. But if you think yours need a little extra boost, the right vitamins and supplements can be beneficial, too.
If your hair needs a little extra TLC, supplements containing vitamin B, argan oil, and fatty acids are great options, according to Amy Shapiro, RD, a certified dietician and nutritionist in private practice in New York City. “Argan oil and fatty acids help nourish your hair, decrease scalp inflammation, and enhance hair growth. Vitamin B, specifically biotin, repairs hair,” she says.
Supplements can also help other hair issues, such as temporary shedding, according to Jennifer Chwalek, MD, a board certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology. “Hair growth is very complicated and hair loss is often the result of multiple factors,” Dr. Chwalek says. “I do think in cases of poor nutrition or during/following telogen effluvium (which is a temporary shedding), supplementation may be important.”
Shapiro recommends looking for collagen in vitamins or supplements. “Collagen is the building block of skin, hair, and nails as it contains many amino acids,” says Shapiro. “It also has been shown to help promote a healthy gut.
